Sewing Class
Level 1 & Level 2 Class descriptions for Little Notes Music School

Absolute beginners (level 1)
For children ages 8 and up with no previous sewing experience.
In this series of 6 weekly lessons students will be introduced to basic hand and machine stitches using fun, take home projects. Each week we will focus on a different sewing skill. Students will be given project kits for some classes but will also be provided with a list of items to bring to for others. For the machine sewing classes, students need to bring their own machines.
Week 1
Basic hand sewing stitches and sewing buttons. Students will learn how to correctly thread a needle, prepare thread for hand sewing, starting and stopping, straight stitches, and some decorative stitches. Students will need to bring their own scissors, hand sewing needles and thread snips.
Week 2
Fabric, grain, right and wrong side, correct cutting and pinning of fabric. Students will need to bring their own scissors, pins, a seam ripper, a seam gauge, and a fabric marking pen or pencil (see class supply list). Students will receive instructions on what they need to bring to the sewing machine class for next week.
Week 3
Meet the sewing machine In this class students will meet their sewing machines and learn how to correctly thread the machine, wind bobbins, how to set tension, and make some simple stitches. We will be making cards, or a note book cover practicing stitches by sewing fabric on paper. Students need to bring their own sewing machines, with the correct bobbins, feet and needles to this class.Week 4
More machine stitching. In this class we will begin to learn about how the machine works when sewing fabric, how to correctly pin fabric and using the sewing machine to sew a simple project.Week 5
Seams, seam finishes and inserting a zipper.Week 6:
Putting what we have learned together. In this final class, students will take the skills they have learned in previous classes to complete a fun final project.
Class supply list:
Fabric cutting scissors (used only for fabric)
Fabric snips
Seam ripper
Seam gauge
Tape measure
Needles (both hand sewing and sewing machine)
Washable fabric marking or fabric marking chalk pencil
Pins with heads: a good buy is to get the yellow quilting pins or glass
headed pins
Sewing machine with the correct bobbins and feet
Sew some more (level 2)
For children ages 8 and up who have some basic sewing experience or who have successfully completed level 1
In this series of six, 90 minute classes, students will continue to learn a variety of hand and machine stitches. Each week we will focus on a different sewing skill, using a series of fun, take home projects. Level 2 classes follow the same sequence as level 1 classes except that the projects require more skill and practice.
Week1
Hand sewing stitches and their functions: basting, catch stitches, hemming, button hole and blanket stitch.
Week 2
Reading a sewing pattern, choosing fabric, right and wrong side of fabric, notions, interfacing.
Week 3
The sewing machine: how to correctly thread the machine, wind bobbins, how to set the thread tension, how to pin, the right needle and thread for your machine, how a sewing machine works. Practice and function of a variety of machine stitches.
Week 4
Laying out a pattern, cutting pinning, marking, interfacing, sewing with the machine.
Week 5
Seams and seam finishes, darts, inserting a zipper.
Week 6
Pulling everything we have learned together by completing a simple sewing project.Class supply list:
